Sound-Spelling Mat – A4 desk size

$4.85 incl. GST

Each Sound-Spelling Mat shows:

  • The 44 sounds of New Zealand English – vowels on one side, consonants on the flip side.
  • The most common spelling patterns for each phoneme are listed underneath, shown in a high-frequency word. Spelling patterns are highlighted in red. Patterns are generally listed from most to least commonly used.
  • These are ideally suited to learners 6 years and up, once they have begun learning more advanced phonics such as variable vowel spellings. The cards would likely overwhelm our youngest learners with too much information 👍🏼

Size: A4 – 210 × 297 mm.

Material: Thick 350gsm card finished with a matt laminate coating for durability.

A Sound Wall Manual would go well with these mats to help you as a teacher become familiar with the phonemes of English, the spellings used to represent them, and how to convey this critical information to learners.

Why use a Sound Mat?

To become a skilled reader & speller, our brains must connect written letter symbols with speech sounds. Using a Sound-Spelling Mat supports learners to connect speech to print and make sense of the writing system of the English language by cracking the alphabetic code.

These Sound-Spelling Mats are intended to be used daily in an interactive, engaging way to support the teaching and learning of:

  • NZ English speech sounds
  • phonemic awareness
  • alphabetic code knowledge for reading and spelling

They will be useful for Tier 1 classroom teaching, Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention, and when working with learners who have additional support needs, such as hearing impairment; speech, language and communication difficulties; and neurodiversity such as Dyslexia… using a Sound Mat will be useful for anyone who is learning to read and write!

I imagine they will be most powerful when they are accessible on student desks as they are engaging with writing tasks, and they are carefully taught how to use the Sound-Spelling Mat to find the spelling patterns of the words they want to write.
