Why use a Sound Wall?
To become a skilled reader, our brains must connect written letter symbols with speech sounds. Using a Sound Wall supports learners to connect speech to print and make sense of the writing system of the English language by cracking the alphabetic code.
These Sound Cards are intended to be used daily in an interactive, engaging way to support the teaching and learning of:
- NZ English speech sounds
- phonemic awareness
- alphabetic code knowledge
They will be useful for Tier 1 classroom teaching, Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention, and when working with learners who have additional support needs, such as hearing impairment; speech, language and communication difficulties; and neurodiversity such as Dyslexia… using a Sound Wall will be useful for anyone who is learning to read and write!
The cards may also be useful in a clinical Speech Language Therapy setting, to support children’s awareness of articulatory placement.
