Why use a Sound Wall?
To become a skilled reader, our brains must connect written letter symbols with speech sounds. Using a Sound Wall supports ākonga to connect speech to print and make sense of the writing system of the English language by cracking the alphabetic code. It also helps kaiako to learn about the sound structure of the language, and feel confident in teaching it!
These Sound Cards are intended to be used daily in an interactive, engaging way to support the teaching and learning of:
- The 20 speech sounds of Te Reo Māori
- phonemic awareness
- alphabetic code knowledge
They will be useful for classroom teaching, supporting learners through intervention, and when working with ākonga who have additional support needs, such as hearing impairment; speech, language and communication difficulties; and neurodiversity such as Dyslexia… using a Sound Wall will be useful for anyone who is learning to read and write!
The cards may also be useful in a clinical Speech Language Therapy setting, to support children’s awareness of articulatory placement.
